Basketball WarfareThe ball, as well as the hearts and hopes of thousands of basketball fans back in the state of Connecticut, hung on the rim at the Verizon Center for what seemed like forever.
Denham Brown, one of seven seasoned stars staring his final collegiate game in the face, had just flown down the left sideline with the destiny of his University of Connecticut basketball team in his hands. The Huskies, the number-one team in the country in eyes of many experts, were somehow trailing the George Mason Patriots, perhaps the biggest Cinderella in the modern history of the NCAA Tournament, 74-72. Only five seconds remained.
Chapter 3
It's supposed to take time to put the pieces in place at the birth of an athletic conference but the Big East's football league suffered few growing pains.
In the very first year of competition, Miami went 12-0 and won the 1991 National Championship. That was a team led by the timely passing of Gino Torretta, a great kicker in Carlos Huerta and a defense spear-headed by linebackers Jessie Armstead and Michael Barrow. Two challenges in November lifted the 'Canes to glory. First was the annual grudge match in Tallahassee against No. 1 ranked Florida State. In what became known as "Wide Right I" the Hurricanes erased a 16-7 deficit in the fourth quarter and went ahead, 17-16, with three minutes left. The Seminoles drove for a game-winning field goal but Gerry Thomas' 34-yard attempt sailed wide right in the final seconds.
Chapter 11
The biggest night in the first month of a new era for Big East basketball actually took place at a football stadium. West Virginia won the league’s football championship and the right to play in the Bowl Championship Series on Jan. 2 against Georgia. The Bulldogs, the Southeast Conference champ, were nearly a touchdown favorite and enjoyed a home town advantage with the Sugar Bowl game moving to Atlanta after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the New Orleans Superdome.
